Compadres-Lajitas Texas

Lajitas in Spanish means "small flat rocks", so named by the layered desert limestone throughout this far west Texas region. Back in this time, there was no resort, no golf course, no fancy restaurant. The appeal was one of desolation, tranquility, being surrounded by Nature's beauty, immersed with the locals who treasured this desert sanctuary; the locals today still pine for what once was - me too. A simple boardwalk of a rafting guide, small grocery, and a druggist with real soda fountain.

The LAJITAS SUN newspaper, and the BADLANDS HOTEL greeted the few annual visitors that passed through; few stayed very long in blistering sun-drenched blowing dust. We sojourned here often us four compadres, always stepping back in time.

We made new friends each visit, while listening to local musicians at the STARLIGHT THEATER or rafting down the Rio Grande river with FARFLUNG ADVENTURES. No trip would be complete for us without the arduous desert trek to the MARISCAL MINE.

PS: The newspaper editor took this photo (circa 1996) which later appeared on the front page. We had arrived a few months after the movie production STREETS OF LAREDO (James Garner) where a few scenes were made at the CONTRABANDO movie set nearby. -RAS-
